Bacterial Infection and Its 5 Preventive Measures

Do you have any experience in your life as you did a mistake later you realize that could have been avoided?  I believe, it is very much sure everyone has this experience in their life.

As there is a proverb, “prevention is better than cure” so it is better to be very careful and stop something happening in the first place than to regret later or trying to fix the damage after it has happened.

Actually, these experiences come live when we have some serious kind of disease or infection in our body.  Your head goes crazy searching for the answer to these questions like how this happened, what I touched, what I ate in my last dinner, where did I travel last time, etc.

The moment you came to know the reason behind your illnesses, you feel it could have been prevented at the first stage.

There are a number of disease conditions and infections we have today. Some could have serious and fatal. Out of those infections, Bacterial Infection is one of the serious infectious disease, which is known to all of us.

In brief, a bacterium (plural bacteria) is a microscopic single cell microorganism. One of the most colonial species in the world.  These tiny monsters can dwell in any element in the atmosphere.

It may be your smartphone, water, air, your door and window handles, your refrigerator handle, skin, your gut, genitourinary tract, you name it.

The famous notion that bacterial cells in the human body outnumber human cells by a factor of 10:1 has been exposed (Bacteria-Wikipedia). But it does not mean all those bacterial cells are harmful to the body. Some bacterial cells play a vital role in human health. They are very useful for our digestion, protecting from viral attacks, fermentation, etc.

Bacteria are very useful for making yogurt. The process is called fermentation. Fermentation of bacteria helps to make alcoholic beverages, cane sugar into glucose, and so on.

The famous milk product Yakult is a fermented milk drink. It is mentioned in the bottle label that contains over 6.5 billion probiotic LcS (Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota) and may help to build immunity. Yakult is also one of the best probiotic suppliers in India.

Harmful bacteria as it is called disease-carrying pathogen are very dangerous. These type of bacteria invade the body and start multiplying. It produces toxins, enzymes, and other such substances. These chemical reactions will help any infected wound to develop tetanus and other serious bacterial illnesses. Some illnesses are caused by toxins of microorganism out of our body, for example, food poisoning, cholera, etc.

A rare type of bacterial infection is called anthrax which serious bacterial illness. It involves especially skin, lungs, or digestive tracts. The spores (dormant) type bacteria live in soil and can be spread via animal, cow, goat, and sheep.

I do not want to go in detail here as this is a vast microbiology subject and it is not possible to include in a 500 to 1000 word article.

The only purpose of writing about bacteria and its preventive measures is to create awareness among the people.

Today more and more people across the globe are affected by these microscopic monsters. People are dying every year in the world because of not taking proper precautions or any such preventive measures in their day to day life.

It is known that the drug resistance power in bacteria is increasing, from single drug resistance to multi-drug resistance, and now it is termed as extensively drug-resistant and even pan-drug-resistant has come to the light. The resistance power of these bugs is so big that it is very difficult for an antibiotic to take control of the disease. Using more antibiotic drugs are also a reason for the rise in these resistant monsters.  For example, MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), VRSA (Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase, E Coli, Enterobacter, etc are such drug-resistant bacteria and they are so powerful that a normally prescribed drug cannot able to fathom.

Antibiotic drug producing big companies are now helpless to manufacture drugs to tackle these superbugs and are investing more and more effort on research and development to find a new way to get respite from these consequences.

So what can we do to overcome this microscopic monster and prevent it from invading our body?

For me, proper precautions and preventive measures and habits should apply in our day to day life to get rid of these bacterial infections.

What are those preventive measures that we should follow to keep these pathogenic bacteria at bay?

Check below the 5 simple but most effective preventive measures that you must apply in your life.

Hand Washing

Your hands could be the culprit to carry those bacteria into your body. Especially, fingernails are the most frequent breeding grounds for these microorganisms. It is said that just washing the hands with soap is not enough to kill all the bacteria as it washes the bacteria but does not kill completely.  Antibacterial soaps can only do so much.

In the hospital, we see disinfectant liquid bottles as this type of gel or liquid will be having a chemical like Chlorhexidine with alcohol. Regular washing your hands with antibacterial soap or liquid could reduce the bacterial population or infection. Make sure you dry your hands with a clean towel or electric hand dryer properly after washing with soap.

Drink Pure Water

Diseases like diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea are the result of water contamination.  Water can be contaminated by animal stool, human stool, garbage, leakage sewage, etc.  The common source of bacteria like E Coli, Campylobacter, Vibrio cholera, etc. is through drinking contaminated water.  So before these killers can affect you, make sure you drink pure water. Do not dump any garbage near your place. Make your surroundings are neat and clean.  Check water pipes and sewage for any leakages.

Good Hygiene Practice

The habit of maintaining good hygiene in your daily life will help to block most of the microorganisms from invading into the body.  The good sanitation system in the home should be practiced and maintained. We need more awareness and practice among people in the rural part of India.

To destroy microorganism completely, whether it is from the human body or any hard surface is called sterilization.  The procedure of doing sterilization varies from different techniques. Home utensils and tools should always be sterilized. All the surgical instruments, tools, and other such items in the hospital, clinic, or salon should be maintained with proper sterilization. Sterilization stops transmission of bacteria from the surface to the human body.

An enhancement program to fight against certain disease-causing bacteria. There are two types of immunization. One is active and other passive immunization.

Active immunization helps prevent infection by encouraging the body’s natural defense system.  On the other hand, passive immunization is given to a person whose immune system does not respond properly to an infection or disease.

Common vaccination in children is very important.  According to the standard schedule of any country, children can take immunization from the government or private hospital according to the standard schedule.

IAP (Indian Academy of Pediatrics) recommended the following vaccines to the children from 0 to 18 years of age.

Please check the link for more details of schedule chart of immunization.

The main goal to take part in the immunization process is to prevent bacterial infections and fatal diseases like tetanus, hepatitis A and B from the body.  That is what it is mandatory to be vaccinated and get rid of these monsters.

How do you think these preventive measures are important in your day to day life?  Are there any such measures or habits to be included?
